When I was younger, I had dreams of becoming a heavy metal god. Not just a casual frontman with an acoustic set down the local — I mean full-blown, hair-swirling, screamo chorus kind of stuff.
I played a few gigs, even blagged my way onto a couple of festival stages, and for a brief moment thought this is it... I'm gonna be massive.

Then real life happened.
Mortgage. Kids. A dodgy back. Suddenly, dreams of touring the world turned into touring soft play centres and rewatching Bluey on loop. But somewhere in that mix, I also flirted with the idea of taking some courses in tattooing — because if I couldn't be on stage, I could at least ink the kind of people who were.

If you've ever felt stuck in a job that drains the soul like a leaky teabag, you're not alone. That Monday morning dread, that living-for-the-weekend feeling… it's no way to live. You're effectively trading five days of boredom for two days of pretending you're okay — and that's not the deal any of us signed up for.

Fancy Doing Something That Helps People?
Maybe you've realised you want to make a real difference. Not the 'fancy title and free biscuits in the breakroom' kind of difference — but the actual, I helped someone today kind. Whether that means retraining as a nurse, working in special needs support, or becoming a teacher who genuinely gives a toss, there's no shortage of fulfilling roles out there.
Yes, it'll take work. And yes, you might need to retrain or get qualified. But there's nothing stopping you — and no expiry date on doing something meaningful (except maybe the student loan age cut-off, but we'll ignore that).
Craving the Great Outdoors?
If being inside makes you twitchy — and not in a 'forgot my phone charger' way — then maybe you need a job that gets you outside. I know plenty of dads who swapped office chairs for outdoor careers and haven't looked back since. You could be leading forest school sessions, working in conservation, or even running team-building paintball sessions (yes, people still do those. Apparently it's character building, not just an excuse to shoot your boss).
It's not always glamorous, and weather in the UK rarely cooperates, but at least you're not staring at spreadsheets wondering if this is how your story ends.
Or Maybe… It's Time to Get Creative Again
If you've got creativity coursing through your veins — and the school nativity costume debacle of 2019 still haunts your nightmares — it might be time to embrace it fully.
Whether it's graphic design, mural painting, or that long-held dream of becoming a tattoo artist, now's the time to make it happen. Courses in tattooing are easier to access than ever, and no, you don't need to have been born with a needle in your hand. You just need a willingness to learn, a bit of patience, and probably a few brave mates willing to let you use their skin as your practice canvas.
Tattooing is one of those jobs that's equal parts art and trust — and once you get going, you can build a reputation that opens doors (and sleeves) you never thought possible.
Final Thoughts From A Former "Almost"-Rockstar

Life's too short to hate what you do. And while I might not have made it to Download Festival, I did find purpose in other things — raising a wild bunch of neurodivergent legends, starting this blog, and learning that career pivots don't have to be scary.
So whether you end up helping others, braving the elements, or tattooing flaming skulls onto people's thighs — just make sure it's something that sets your soul on fire.
You've got time. You've got options. And hey, if all else fails, you've got a mate here who still remembers how to scream into a mic like it's 2006.
