Naming your baby boy is no small feat—it’s a blend of tradition, creativity, and a dash of cultural influence (and if you’re anything like me, a lot of telling off from the spouse!)
If you’ve been scouring the web for inspiration or help with baby boy names, to help you name your Generation Beta baby (2024+), then look no further, Dad Blog has your back!
Mega Update: I’ve had the absolute privilege of speaking with the fabulous Baby Name Expert & Celebrity Name Consultant, SJ Strum!
Not only is she a naming genius, but she also offered her expert insights on my predictions for 2025 baby boy name trends—and I’ve woven her input throughout this post. Her perspective adds a whole new layer to this post, and I guarantee you’ll struggle to click away!
All her contributions are in boxes like this one!
My wife and I have been watching her videos since before the birth of our 3rd daughter, and when I told her I’d had the chance to speak to SJ she audibly “eeee’d!”
I’ve taken a deep dive into the official ONS list of baby boy names from 1996-2021, along with 2023 trends and layering on SJ’s observations to predict the most popular boy names for 2025.
Along the way, I’ve uncovered some fascinating trends, intriguing tidbits, and insights to help you choose the perfect baby boy name.
If you’re a return reader, you’ll know that I ended up with five kids (and only one boy)!
After passing up on the name Maximilian, the wife and I finally settled on Dad Jr. (Not his real name, but I’ll keep you guessing). We must have spent days trawling baby boy name websites before landing on a name for our son-to-be.
That whole experience inspired me to create this post (granted it’s taken nearly a decade to get around to it, but better late than never!)—a resource I hope to expand over time to help other parents through the madness that is name-picking.
But before we begin… *takes a deep breath and puts on his best call-centre voice*
The information presented in this post is based on data provided by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for England and Wales. The insights and trends draw upon the top 100 baby boy names for 2023 and the all baby boy names reported from 1996-2021 (names with no representation from 2019-2021 were removed from the dataset).
While every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, naming preferences and trends can vary regionally and culturally. For the latest official data and further details, please refer directly to the ONS website and our data disclaimer is at the end of this post.
Here we go!
Whether you’re after timeless classics, trendy modern picks, or something entirely unique, I’ve broken down the data to make your search easier. Let’s uncover the trends shaping baby boy names in 2025 and help you find the perfect name for your little legend to be.

Interesting Trends and Highlights
Now with that out the way, let’s get on with it!
Five days of data analysis later and here’s what I’ve discovered:
A is for Amazing!
The letter A reigns supreme, with 732 names starting with this powerhouse initial. Parents are clearly drawn to names like Alexander, Arlo, and Archie, which combine charm, strength, and timeless appeal.
SJ: There were actually 6 boys just named A last year! It’s maybe being lazy going through the a-z name lists, but A names do have a timeless and traditional quality and are often really phonetic making them appealing.
We’re really traditional in the UK with our boy names and it’s interesting to see that those Royal Classics like Albert and Alfred are being taken over in popularity with their less formal nicknames Albie and Alfie.
Arthur is the most common A name for boys and it’s got the great blend of being vintage but newly popular, Arthur was nearly extinct between 1950-2000 and only got back into the top 100 in 2009 then soared up the charts.
Amelia and Ava are in our top ten for girls and interestingly start and end in a. Ending in a vowel means they will suit most surnames so it’s an extra tick for parents.
Short and Stylish
The average baby boy name in 2025 is 6 letters long—just the right mix of simplicity and sophistication. Names like George, Arthur, and Archie adhere to this trend, proving that less can truly be more.
Cultural Giants
Names like Muhammad and Noah stand as timeless titans, with Muhammad projected to top the list in 2025 at an impressive 4,747 mentions. Meanwhile, Noah, a consistent favourite, holds steady at 4,462 occurrences. These names highlight the lasting appeal of cultural and spiritual heritage.
Timeless Titans
I love the phrase timeless titans! Names were historically given from religious texts, in christianity you had to have a biblical name in order to be christened which was a cultural norm. In the Victorian times, vicars became less strict about this rule and we saw the rise of what is called ‘romantic names’ and the Victorian Hipsters did us a lot of favours creating a Baby Name Boom.
Friendly Face-Offs
Tied at 690 mentions each, Toby and Alfred share the spotlight. Similarly, Riley and Finn (650 mentions each) are friendly rivals, reflecting the diversity in name preferences.
Friendly Pairs
SJ: We celebrate people’s individuality so much more than any generation that came before us, so it’s amazing to see in these pairings that a Rio could be sat next to John in class and Robert is just as popular as Zion.
Hidden Gems
At the quieter end of the spectrum, rare names like Blade and Romain squeak onto the list with just 3 mentions each. Perfect for parents seeking unique yet meaningful options.
SJ: I love unique but not wacky names and it’s great to see how much braver we are today when it comes to choosing rarer names. I think it follows parenting trends, we’re much less formal with our children than even our grandparents era and don’t pass down names through generations as much as people used to and it’s freed parent’s up to choose more unique names with special meaning to them.
Trending Baby Name Initials
A is the undisputed leader, but other contenders include M (408 names), R (385 names), K (354 names), and S (332 names). These initials are packed with potential for stylish monikers.
The “Ah” Factor
Soft and melodic endings are all the rage. Names ending in -an (like Ethan and Sebastian) lead the charge with 653 mentions, followed by -on, -en, and -in. These endings strike the perfect balance between gentle and strong.
Nature-Inspired Names Take Root
Names like River, Rowan, and Fox are soaring in popularity. These earthy choices reflect a growing love for the natural world—perhaps a nod to eco-conscious parenting trends.
If you’re looking for more inspiration on nature inspired boys names, then we’ve got the post for you!
Royal Revival
Classic and regal names like Henry, Arthur, and George remain firm favourites. They exude tradition, history, and that quintessential British charm.
Modern Minimalism
Short, punchy names like Kai, Max, and Finn are perfect for parents who love a contemporary, minimalist vibe. These one-syllable wonders are effortlessly cool and easy to pair with any surname.
SJ: I love the one syllable trend and find more and more people are asking for a simpler first name as they blend surnames. There’s a lot more double barrelled surnames now as we don’t expect women to drop theirs in marriage.
Globally Influenced
Names like Luca, Arlo, and Mohammad show a multicultural influence, blending seamlessly across languages and cultures. The UK’s rich diversity shines through in these global favourites.
Names With a Story
Parents are embracing names with rich histories, like Alexander (from Alexander the Great) and Arthur (from Arthurian legend). These choices add depth and meaning, connecting the past to the present.
Rising Stars
Unique names like Bowie, Atlas, and Otis are climbing the ranks. They offer parents a way to stand out without straying too far from familiar ground.
Top 5 Biggest Risers and Fallers
Names like Hudson, Mateo, Ayan, Rayyan, and Ziggy have skyrocketed in popularity between 1996 and 2021, each carving out its unique cultural niche.
- Hudson, once a lesser-known name, has surged, likely influenced by its association with strong, geographic ties like the Hudson River.
- Mateo, a globally recognised name with Spanish and Italian roots, reflects the growing multicultural influences in the UK.
- Ayan and Rayyan, both with Arabic origins, highlight the rising appreciation for culturally diverse names, appealing for their melodic sound and deep meanings.
- Meanwhile, Ziggy, a quirky and unconventional choice, owes its resurgence to pop culture, possibly drawing inspiration from David Bowie’s iconic alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
In contrast, names like Kallum, Glen, Reiss, Kristopher, and Greg have seen their popularity wane.
- Kallum, a variant of Callum, has fallen out of favour as parents gravitate toward simpler spellings.
- Glen, a name with nature-inspired roots, has experienced a sharp decline, likely due to its association with older generations.
- Reiss, once a sleek and stylish pick, seems overshadowed by modern trends.
- Kristopher, with its unique “K” spelling, struggles as traditional forms like Christopher maintain dominance.
- Finally, Greg, a staple of 90s simplicity, has faded as shorter names like Leo or Max take the spotlight.
Questions for SJ Strum
Themes & Categories of Names Resonating With Parents
Seb: What themes or categories of names are resonating with parents right now? (E.g., traditional vs. modern, celebrity-inspired, or gender-neutral names.)
SJ: I love the one syllable trend and find more and more people are asking for a simpler first name as they blend surnames. There’s a lot more double barrelled surnames now as we don’t expect women to drop theirs in marriage.
What Names Do You Personally Love of Think Deserve More Attention?
Seb: Are there any names you personally love or think deserve more attention?
SJ: I love vintage gems like Sybil, Alma and Hyacinth. One of my favourite places to find unique names is old passenger ships, there are so many Puritan names who used to name their children after virtues.
My favourites are Saachi meaning truth, Zita meaning seeker, True meaning Truth.
For boys I love quirky takes on classics like Jago the Cornish variant of John or Kit instead of Christopher.
I also love playful retro boy names like Griffin, Scout, Sonny and Pippin. They always make me smile.
Common Mistakes Parents Make When Choosing Their Baby Names
The Hidden Dilemma: Baby Name Regret
During my chat with the amazing SJ Strum, we dived into a topic that so many parents face but rarely discuss—baby name regret. According to SJ, this is surprisingly common. “I get so many emails about changing a baby’s name,” she shared, “and most people feel so emotional and tormented by not liking the original name they chose. It’s really reassuring for them to know they’re not alone.”
Turns out, changing a name is simpler than most people think—just a quick deed poll form costing under £100, and it can be done at any time. (Not that I’m advocating you should go naming your baby something outrageous just to see if it sticks!)
SJ explained that baby name regret often stems from feeling rushed to announce the name after birth. “It’s so important to say the name out loud a lot before committing,” she advised. “Walk around the house calling it out, stick post-it notes up with the name written on them, and make it feel like yours.” Wise advice! She even gives parents the grace of holding off on name announcements until they’re 100% certain. “Coming from me, that’s a huge grace—ha ha!”
But here’s the kicker: it’s often other people’s reactions that cause regret. Mispronunciations, misspellings, or even outright confusion can leave parents questioning their choice. “You need to love the name enough to correct it a few times,” SJ pointed out.
She told me a brilliant story about her daughter Evelina, a name she fell in love with while in Sweden. But she spent the entire pregnancy thinking it was spelled Evalina, only realising the mistake when she sat down to write it out. “I still loved it,” she said, “but she often gets called Eee-velina or Evangelina—her swimming teacher has called her that for years and can’t seem to change it! I don’t mind correcting it because I love the name.”
I feel this in my core. Our second eldest daughter has her name mangled at every doctor’s or dentist’s appointment we go to. You can see the visible panic on their faces as they take a wild stab in the dark, completely butchering it. The look of pure rage my daughter gives them is unforgettable. That’s her hill to die on, and honestly, I respect it.
So, if you’re still hunting for the perfect name, take SJ’s advice: live with the name for a while. Say it out loud, imagine it shouted across the park or whispered at bedtime. Because while a name is easy enough to change, finding the name—the one that fits your little one perfectly—takes time, patience, and sometimes a bit of trial and error.

Methodology for Predicting the Most Popular Boy Names for 2025
To forecast the most popular boy names for 2025, a combination of historical data, statistical modelling, and trend analysis was employed. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the process:
Data Sources the Projections Were Based On:
Historical Data (1996–2021): Baby name rankings and counts from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in England and Wales.
2023 Dataset: The latest available rankings and counts for the top 100 boy names.
2025 Total Birth Estimates: A projected 297,619 male births, with 282,738 allocated to the top 5312 names (95%± of total births).
Normalisation of 2023 Data
To align the 2023 data with the projected total births for 2025:
Each name’s count from 2023 was proportionally scaled to fit the estimated number of male births while preserving relative popularity.
Statistical Modelling
To predict ranks and counts for 2025, the following techniques were applied:
- Linear Regression:
Historical ranks and counts for boy names (1996–2023) were analysed to identify trends.
Linear regression was used to project rankings and counts for 2025 based on these trends.
- Weighted Smoothing:
For names with erratic trends or gaps in the dataset, weighted averages were applied to stabilise projections.
For newer names, recent data points (2021–2023) were given more weight to account for current trends.
- Combined Variations:
Variations of popular names (e.g., Muhammad, Mohammed, Mohammad) were aggregated to provide a clearer picture of their overall popularity when weighting popularity.
Individual variations were preserved for granular insights.
- Adjustments for Cultural and Societal Factors
While the projections relied heavily on numerical data, some qualitative adjustments were made:
Pop Culture and Celebrity Influence: Names like Leo and Elio, bolstered by cultural references (e.g., Call Me By Your Name), were expected to see continued growth.
Regional Variations: Analysis of regional data showed names like Muhammad dominating in urban areas like London, which influenced their national rank.
- Categories and Comparisons
The dataset was further analysed to identify:
Timeless Names: Names consistently in the top 20 across decades.
Emerging Names: Names that appeared after 2010 but are rising rapidly.
Peaked Names: Names that were once popular (e.g., in the 1990s or 2000s) but are now declining.
- Limitations
While the methodology is robust, it’s important to note:
External Influences: Unexpected events like celebrity baby announcements, blockbuster movies, or societal shifts could impact naming trends in ways not accounted for. (I don’t keep up with trends at all, so famous footballers or singers aren’t on my radar and haven’t influenced this dataset).
Localised & Societial Trends: Regional preferences may differ significantly, even if names are presented as nationally popular. This includes the lack of weighting by region.
Why It Matters
This methodology offers an entertaining and insightful look at baby boy naming trends for 2025, combining the power of data with cultural context.
While it’s not a crystal ball, it provides a somewhat meaningful snapshot of how naming patterns are likely to evolve, helping parents and enthusiasts dive deeper into the fascinating world of baby names.
TL;DR
The projections are here for fun! While they’re mathematically sound and based on thorough analysis of ONS data, they’re not guaranteed to predict the naming trends for boys of 2025 with absolute certainty. Consider them a helpful guide (with a sprinkle of guesswork) to inspire your baby name journey.

The rise in gender-neutral names reflects changing societal norms around identity and naming conventions. Parents increasingly choose names that allow flexibility and inclusivity, making unisex names a popular option.
Despite fluctuating popularity, gender-neutral names have shown enduring appeal, with their share stabilising at a higher percentage than two decades ago. This suggests they’re not a fleeting trend but a lasting shift in naming preferences.
The proportion of gender-neutral names saw a significant jump from 12.9% in 1996 to a peak of 16.7% in 2012. Although it has stabilised at around 15%, this remains higher than before, highlighting the continued appeal of unisex names.
Names like Noah, Leo, Finley, Teddy, and Ronnie have all experienced a steady rise in popularity during this time.
Names with natural or minimalist undertones, such as River & Rowan are seeing consistent growth. This reflects a broader trend towards names inspired by nature and simplicity.
